With less than 15 minutes to drive why not take a day trip to Protoras? This buzzing little place has some of the best beaches in Cyprus. Like Ayia Napa there are a lot of tourists but also many locals from the capital, Nicosia, make the most of their weekends here. There are some cute little shops with beach wear clothing so if you have packed light and need a few extras you will find what you are looking for here.

CYPRUS |
|
A drive to Nicosia is approx 50 minutes but it is worth it to see the island’s capital. There are some cultural aspects to the city, so if this is something that fascinates you visit www.cyprisevents.net to see what music, dance, arts or theatre performances are happening. Nicosia is very quite in August as many of the locals escape the heat and head for the sea, this also means that many shops, restaurants etc are closed, so bear this in mind if you are planning a day trip. Ayia Thekla is a quiet little place not far from Ayia Napa, approx 6 kilometres to be exact. It has a very large British community and there is not that much to do except relax. But what it does offer is a mini retreat from the chaos of Napa and a chance to read a good book in peace and quiet close to the coast. The church of Ayia Thekla is a local landmark. It is rumoured to have been occupied by the many armies that conquered Cyprus, it’s worth a peak. Approx 23 miles from Ayia Napa is Larnaca, the roads in Cyprus are very straight forward so it’s very easy to get there. It is the island's second largest commercial port and an important tourist resort. If you are planning a day of shopping, Larnaca is by far a better option than Ayia Napa. The seaside promenade in Larnaca is great for people watching but don’t expect breath taking views of the coast. Believe it or not most of the Cyprus coastline is rugged. One such place where this is very clear is Cape Greco. Here is where you will find people diving off sea caves into turquoise water. I, myself, am not so brave but it’s fantastic to watch nonetheless. While you are there, Cape Greco Park is also a good destination also for bird watching during bird migration in spring and autumn if this is something you enjoy. Although it is some distance from Ayia Napa, if you are just planning on doing one day trip your entire holiday then this should be it. You not only get to escape the heat, the higher you go the cooler it gets, you also get to escape a little bit of modern life and trade it for traditional. There are nine churches and one monastery in Troodos that are counted among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites and several other monasteries for you to explore. If this is not your thing, there are plenty of things to see that will bring you back in time. Ayia Napa also offers something exceptional in that you can also visit neighbouring countries on your trip such as Egypt. Many tour operators offer two night trips to Egypt. Louis Travels even offers a full day trip by plane, if you want to have one jam packed day and experience Cairo then this is your chance but I suspect it is very tiring and it is costly. Then again you can always spend the rest of your break lapping up the sun and get to experience two countries in one holiday. The decision is yours.
