Lounging in the sun everyday of your holiday in Ayia Napa is tempting; book in one hand, with a cold frappe in the other. This may be just what you need from your break. But with so many activities to do on the island, particularly in Ayia Napa, it would be a waste to spend every day by the pool or at the beach. Instead of listing the usual activities, we tried to dig out some wacky activities that will be sure to get you out of your sun lounger and on your way.

Fancy a stroll on the seabed? No I am not crazy this really exists. Visit www.underseawalkers.com if you don’t believe me. Try their shallow water helmet. There is a constant supply of fresh air pumped into the helmet, the excess bubbles flow freely out of the bottom, so you can walk underwater and explore rocks and watch pretty fish float by, without worrying about breathing techniques. Simply magic, weird but wonderful. Although I am a little weary, to say the least, when it comes to scuba diving, I do think it’s a fantastic activity that offers an escape from the “real” world. If you are natural in water it will be no time until you join the Aphrodite goddess at sea. There are many diving options available and courses for the early learner to advanced. Pack a swim suit and a small picnic in your backpack as today you are going to hire a bicycle from one of the rental stores and enjoy a picnic on the cliffs. Leave early morning if you are visiting in the peak of summer as it will get too hot later in the day. Follow the road to Cavo Greko and be met by the renowned protected national park. The park lies between the towns of Ayia Napa and Protaras, find a suitable picnic spot at the high point of the cliffs and enjoy every minute. I am not very skilled when it comes to sport but I try my best and I won’t admit defeat. When I found that I was actually quite good at mini golf, I couldn’t get enough of it. So for all you sport star wannabes who need to get one up on your partner, take a trip to one of the many mini golf courses and let the game begin. You can’t leave Ayia Napa without trying one of the many boat safaris on offer at the port. There is everything to choose from including limo VIP cruises to Dolphin boat safaris. I was happy with my selection though aboard The Yellow Submarine. For 10 euro per person it is a great way to pass a few hours while also getting a fantastic tan at sea. The crew themselves are more than entertaining; the sailor is a character in his own right and looks as though he is a permanent fixture of the boat, there is also a very knowledgeable Irish man who loves to share his wisdom and secrets of the sea and of course there is the owner of the boat Gorgis, I will leave you to experience this character on your own.. words cannot simply describe this fellow. Don’t expect to see the most amazing fish in the world in the underwater viewing booth of the boat, but you will be sure to enjoy it regardless. We were actually lucky to spot one of the family of seals that occupy the waters while on our trip. Since I am Irish, this was not a novelty, but with the excitement of everyone on the boat it was hard not to start happily snapping with my camera too. Located close to Ayia Napa centre is Water World, Ayia Napa’s themed water park. Although some people consider the prices to be a little expensive (32 euro per adults and 18 euro for children), it is a great day out that entertains everyone from morning ‘til late evening. Start of with the “Quest of Heracles” water ride and prepare yourself for some tummy somersaults. Anyone want to be flung in the air at high speed? Yes, no, maybe? Slingshot is an experience you must have before you leave Ayia Napa, it’s actually a lot scary than it looks but on your first go you may feel that for a split second your heart has left your body. The ride is open from 3 pm until about 5 or 6 am so you have no excuses about not having time to visit it. A round metal launch capsule, attached to four steel cables is operated by a series of gigantic springs, this is what launches you into the air. Before you are sprung like a catapult, be warned you are lowered into the ground. The ride is capable of reaching up to 90 metres at approximately 160 km per hour in the space of two seconds. Buckle up.. |
