Get in Gear!!! Driving in Cyprus |
|
When we travel abroad, we often think that once we have sorted the best car hire deal we have little else to worry about when it comes to driving in another country. Cyprus is a fantastic place to cruise on coastal roads while taking in the breathtaking views, there are a few things a tourist needs to consider before venturing off in that dreamy rented convertible. As in every country you visit, there is a certain technique to driving and it’s not something they teach you when taking your driving test. So buckle up and pay attention to the following pointers, as we present the Good, the Bad and the Ugly of driving in Cyprus: THE GOOD Local people in all parts of Cyprus are generally very attentive and friendly when it comes to giving directions. So don’t be shy about asking the way. This is actually the best possible thing you can do when looking for a particular village. No map, navigation system or sign post can tell you quite like a local. One major bonus to driving in Cyprus is that roads are simple, the motorways easily connect you to all major towns and of course the capital, Nicosia. The speed limit on motorways is 100 Km/h, which means no matter where you go, nowhere really takes that long to get to. So don’t be afraid to explore. Road signs are in English and in Greek again making things much easier for us. The biggest plus when driving in this country is that the entire island is toll free, so there is absolutely no need to rustle about for change in a desperate attempt to find some coins. Cyprus accepts the driving licences of all EU Member States. Non-EU citizens may drive on valid foreign licences for a period. So again driving is made easy. Cyprus enjoys heavenly climates, simple living and picturesque views, soon any or all concerns about driving abroad will soon become secondary. THE BAD Do not assume if the lights are green it is safe to go. Local drivers can be unpredictable particularly at traffic light controlled junctions. Red to them is often disregarded as a mere guideline not a law. To avoid ending up in a situation that ultimately leads your rented car visiting the repair shop, expect the unexpected and proceed with caution. In Cyprus, one should drive on the LEFT. Be aware though that many local drivers disregard this and you will often find them verging to your side of the road. Stay calm and think like Michael Schumacher. Cypriot drivers are known to be aggressive, so play on the “I am not a local” or else beat them at their own game and drive with a purpose. Only do this when you are comfortable with a particular route. THE UGLY Ignore the saying “When in Rome do as the Romans do”, do not venture after local drivers down no entry streets or attempt to overtake at traffic lights. This comes with a certain skill that is acquired over time. Finding a parking space is often a difficulty, not because there are no purpose built spaces but because most local drivers use three spaces to park their car. Well, life is laid back here so why should parking be the cause of stress? So whether it is a sexy convertible, boisterous SUV or subtle, bubbly Micra, you will be putting into gear, don’t become distracted by the stereo, air con or rear view mirror. Remember our winning formula and driving like a local should become a breeze. |
