Activities & Adventures

Lying to the west of the town of Larnaca is the Salt Lake. If you are keen to see some scenery and catch some flamingoes on camera this is the place to go.

This distinctive landmark is made up of a network of four salt lakes, three of which are interconnected. Try and visit in late autumn or winter when the lake is at its prettiest. In summer the water evaporates and it doesn’t make for such a great pic.

Larnaca has quite a few historical treasures to offer the tourist. One in particular is The Historical Archives Museum. If you fancy taking a tour around an 1881 building and exploring a large collection of the city’s coins then this is the place to do so. The second floor of the building however is only open for researchers as rare books, editions and documents can be found there.

CYPRUS

Larnaca does have several beaches,  although many are not as pretty as other parts of the island. One beach that does offer a nice walk is McKenzie beach. The water is great here for swimming with children, as you have to walk for some distance before you reach the depth of your waist. The beach is located less than a ten minute drive from the airport, so if you do arrive in Cyprus mid day make the most of it and head to this spot to kick off your holiday.

It’s off to the Camel Park. Word of warning; these guys are grumpier than me at 6am in the morning when I have just been out the previous night. The area itself is nicely set up for children with a good play area and if you are brave enough to tackle this grumpy beast then a short ride can be fun and I must say makes for some exotic photos.

If you do like to immerse yourself in the history of a place then head to the Larnaca Medieval Castle & Museum. It is situated by the seaside, so if you are with someone who has had quite enough of your history tours, then they can always have lemonade by the sea or browse the small gift shops while you tour the museum. The fort was built in 1625 and has some great artifacts from the site of Kition. The most interesting fact about this place is that it also was used as a prison and now serves more as a cultural centre.

Make your way to the old town of Larnaca and pay a visit to the Saint Lazarus Church. It is a late 9th century church and so that in itself makes it worth a visit. The Church was built over the reputed (second) tomb of Lazarus.

If you fancy doing what the locals do, take a walk on the Larnaca promenade in the evening and enjoy an ice-cream. I recommend the Papafillippou ice-cream stand or if you really want to spoil yourself have a rest at Haagen Dazs and choose from the wide selection.

The promenade is a great place for people watching. Stroll to the end of the promenade and take a peak at some of boats and yachts docked there, believe me it will be enough to make you jealous.
