Tomb of the Kings The whole of Paphos is a World Heritage Site and its most famous aspect is the Tomb of the Kings. Dubbed Cyprus’ equivalent to Egypt’s Valley of the Kings, it’s an impressive place. Steps lead down to the tombs which have been carved out of solid rock, complete with Doric columns. Much evidence of its occupants has long since disappeared but the tombs are nonetheless impressive. Housing the remains of 100 Ptolemaic dignitaries, the catacombs were eventually occupied by early Christians who lived and worshipped there. Kourion An amazing ruined city near modern day Episkopi, on the road from Paphos to Limassol, it is most famous for its large amphitheatre which, now fully restored, is used for operatic and dramatic performances with the Mediterranean Sea as its backdrop. Venturing away from the amphitheatre, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful mosaics at almost every turn and a range of buildings from various historical periods including a Christian Basilica, Roman baths and the beautiful Sanctuary to Apollo. A vast site, you’ll need a whole day to explore it properly but remember to bring a sun hat, lotion and water. St Paul’s Pillar You can’t help but be overawed as you look out across the ruins surrounding St Paul’s Pillar. Here, according to the bible St Paul was given 39 lashes for preaching the word of Jesus. The actual pillar still stands after countless earthquakes across the millennia. Reading the extract from the bible as I stood outside Ayia Kyriaki church, built and rebuilt on the site, I could picture the scene where eventually Paul converted the Roman governor who became the first Christian governor in the world. |
