CYPRUS

The Best Beaches in Cyprus

The notion of the ‘Best Beach’ is somewhat subjective. It is very dependent on what you want from a beach.

Luckily Cyprus has plenty of beaches that could be categorised as a ‘Best Beach’ and I’ve included four different ones here so that you can see what’s available.

Nissi Beach

If you want pale, powder soft sand, shallow, azure seas and the closest we’ll get to the types of beach you’d find in the Caribbean, then Nissi Beach is for you. Just outside Ayia Napa, and accessed most easily near the Nissi Beach Hotel, this beach has everything a sun lover, family or water sports enthusiast could want from a day by the sea.

A narrow sandbank, exposed only at low tide leads to ‘Rabbit Island which can offer an easy and satisfying destination should you get bored of sunbathing and fancy a gentle stroll. The sea is shallow (less than a metre deep) or to nearly 50 metres from the shore so it’s very safe for children,

especially as there are no currents in the bay. Moored alongside Rabbit Island are the water sport facilities which include parasailing, jet skis, canoes and pedaloes. A small selection of fast food cafes and snack bars dot the rear of the beach ensuring that you needn’t move far for a perfect day!

Lara Beach

Now for something completely different! On the western shore of the island and accessed only by a dirt track negotiable carefully in a basic hire car lies Lara Beach. What a romantic name and it truly lives up to its billing. Isolated, rugged and tranquil, it’s the ultimate ‘chill’ beach in the west of the island. Here, in June and July, turtles complete their epic journeys to return to lay their eggs year after year. The beach has barely a handful of tourists on it at any time of year and to sit in the Lara Taverna, sipping drinks or having lunch while the beach sweeps around the bay in front of you is sheer heaven.

Coral Bay

This is the Nissi Beach of the west of Cyprus, a golden soft sandy beach in a small bay, shallow sea and every amenity you could think of. Perfect for families with its convenient location close to the hotels of Coral Bay, the water is beautifully warm throughout the summer and early autumn.

In summer, beach volleyball is a popular activity here and annual championships, sponsored by Keo, provide exciting entertainment for visitors. For a more secluded beach, just around the headland is Corallia Beach, a smaller, quieter version of Coral Bay but still with a host of facilities.

Konnos Beach

A recent discovery for me, Konnos beach is found outside Ayia Napa, off the road to Protaras, near the towering grandeur of Cape Greco. Billed as one of the most picturesque beaches on the island, it is rarely packed allowing beach goers to enjoy the beautiful scenery in peace.

The beach faces away from the wind meaning that the sea is endlessly calm here. The sand is soft and butter yellow and wading out into the shallow water rewards you with the sight of beautiful starfish dotting the sea bed. Quiet as it is, the beach still offers a good range of facilities including lifeguards during the day. If you’re staying in the Ayia Napa area, it’s a must visit beach - you won’t be disappointed.
