Fruit Strange activity you may say but Limassol is the main citrus growing and processing area for Cyprus and you’ll never taste an orange more juicy and delicious as one freshly picked from the tree. If you’re really into your vitamin C, make sure you never get a cold again and buy sacks of oranges at rock bottom prices from roadside stalls near the Red Seal Phasouri Plantation. A particular recommendation is the sherkerika, an old fashioned variety and said to be the sweetest orange available. Mind what you do with those sticky hands afterwards!

Learn to Sail Limassol Marina have several companies offering RYA sailing courses with internationally accepted qualifications. Book a week’s holiday to the resort and take your competent crew certificate. What better place to learn to sail than in the warm waters of the Mediterranean? The costs are reasonable and you’ll have a great time exploring the beautiful coastline whilst learning. The boats are all top quality and well maintained and the instructors speak perfect English. Follow a Wine Route Limassol is the major wine producing area in Cyprus and there’s a variety of wine routes you can follow up through the wine-making villages behind Limassol. Free tastings abound at the participating vineyards which are now producing superb quality wine. Pick up maps and further information from the CTO offices, choose a designated driver (I feel sorry for them – perhaps buy a special bottle for them for later!) and head off through beautiful scenery. Many of the vineyards have little restaurants serving simple but delicious fare. Visit the Keo Factory You’ve seen where it grows and seen little wineries producing delicious wine but now visit the serious winery. Keo run daily tours of their factory in Limassol where you’ll see how the wine, beer and brandy is made along with Commandaria. The tour ends with a tasting in their comfortable hospitality suite. Very necessary after sniffing those tempting smells from the vats. You’ll also see how the wine industry developed in Cyprus from 6000 years ago until the present day and find out how Cyprus is well on the way to becoming a producer of internationally recognised wines. King (or Queen) for a Day Limassol is inextricably linked with the Crusades and King Richard the Lionheart. Walk in his footsteps, stand where he married his love Berengaria of Navarre after redressing the sleight given to her by Isaac Komemnos which led to the Knights Hospitaller’s take over of the island. Anticipating his defeat of Isaac he also had himself proclaimed King of Cyprus and his wife Queen of England. Move on to Kolossi where the Knights mulled over their business empire that continued long after the final defeat in the Crusades. Culture and Chic Visit the Lanitis Carob Mill Development. In 2002 the Lanitis Foundation rescued the defunct carob processing mill renovating the building and turning it into a museum dedicated to the history of carob production on the island. Carob trees are very interesting, if you break off a branch the wood is the colour of raw flesh and when burnt it produces a red flame. Much of the carob beans were milled for their syrup which was turned into feed pellets for animals. Today the centre is self supporting through the cultural exchange centre and trendy boutiques and restaurants that fill its courtyard. Promenade As with many of Cyprus’ towns, the municipality has renovated the seafront turning it into a palm lined wide boulevard open only to pedestrians and cyclists. You’ll see plenty of roller bladers too giving the area a feeling of Venice Beach. Lots of decent restaurants and tavernas line the promenade but its worth avoiding the fast food outlets and steak and chips emporia. The promenade runs the whole length of Limassol’s front giving a good workout for the fit, probably worth getting a taxi back from the other end if you’re going to attempt the lot! |
