Cyprus, the island of love |
|
Aphrodite, goddess of love, beauty and sexuality was born here, rising from the foaming waves on a seashell at Petra Tou Romiou near Paphos. Local legend still says that those swimming around the rock will emerge from the sea ten years younger. Further along the western coast you’ll come to The Baths of Aphrodite where the goddess washed herself before her arranged marriage to Hephaestus. As she washed, the handsome god Adonis watched her and was overcome by her beauty. Aphrodite, noticing her admirer, fell instantly in love with him and they became inseparable. However there’s much more to this romantic island than the story of the ultimately ill-fated lovers. Beauty abounds everywhere, from breathtaking scenery to fiery sunsets and starlit strolls along secluded beaches after the sun has set. There’s a special feel to the island too, born of the hospitality of the islanders who greet you with wide smiles and welcoming arms. Many choose Cyprus for their weddings, having been held spellbound watching a traditional village wedding where bride and groom exchange headdresses of flowers and guests pin their monetary gifts to the bride’s gown. With over 340 days of sunshine a year you’re nearly guaranteed that the sun will shine on your special day. If the heat of the coast gets too much there’s the pine scented cooler air of the mountain villages where tiny traditional hotels pamper you as you relax after meandering along nature trails that take you deep into the pine forests of Troodos. So, whether you’ve spent your days in Cyprus on its sun-drenched sandy beaches or exploring its rich and varied culture, what better way is there to spend time with a loved one than sharing a bottle of the island’s excellent wine with a delicious meal overlooking the crystal-clear azure sea as it laps gently against the shore, just as it did the day Aphrodite blessed this beautiful island. |
