Lady’s Mile Beach Great for a long gallop on a thoroughbred, that’s exactly how Lady’s Mile Beach got its name. A former British governor used to exercise ‘Lady’ here each morning galloping a mile along the sandier stretches towards RAF Akrotiri. At the road end the beach is pebbly but a little exercise rewards you with less busy stretches of golden or white sand and shallow, crystal clear water. There’s virtually no development on the beach, just some sun bleached wooden restaurants spaced out along the beach. Almost Caribbean outback in atmosphere it’s my recommendation for a quiet day by the shore.

Governor’s Beach Governor's Beach can be found east of the city on the way to Larnaca and is signposted off the motorway. This beach has beautiful golden sands mixed with pebbles along with remarkable white rocks and shallow clear waters. This peaceful haven is ideal for families and romantic couples alike. It’s called Governor’s Beach after the former governor who was so entranced by the scenery he used to swim there every morning to prepare himself for the day ahead. This spectacular beach is ideal for snorkelling, boating, fishing and windsurfing. For the active nature lover there are many trails along the beach or in the hills that fringe the coastline. There is a good selection of restaurants to be found here, where you can enjoy your lunch or dinner sitting under the trees and admiring the crystal clear water or the beautiful sunset. Pissouri Beach Pissouri Beach has a growing reputation as a genteel beach and with its excellent but not intrusive facilities it’s sure to grow further. Excellent tavernas above the beach serve delicious fresh lunches and dinners. Like the village itself, all efforts have been made to preserve its charm and its Cypriot atmosphere ensures its appeal to locals as well as the expats and tourists. On Sundays, many Cypriot and expat families will enjoy picnics, games and music here, adding to its feel. The beach itself is clean, safe, part sandy and part shingle and there are some water sports available in the summer. Kourion Beach Many people miss this beach more concerned about visiting the ancient city above it. For this reason it is quiet and unspoilt. Light grey sand and small Pebbles are gently washed by the lapping waves and the constant cooling breeze takes the edge off the summer heat and allows windsurfers to glide effortlessly across the waters. Its underdevelopment is in part due to its position within the British Sovereign Base but its still easily accessible by bus from Limassol centre. You’ll need to bring parasols as there is no shade apart from when you lazily drift up to the occasional taverna for lunch. Take notice of the warning signs that indicate the Eastern end of the beach is unsafe for swimming. So, if you’re visiting Kourion, why not cool off afterwards in the sea. |
