Concorde Boat Experience

There’s nothing like the reassurance of going to join an experience and see the happy smiling faces of fellow guests returning from the trip you’re about to join! Well I missed out on that this time because of a spot of car trouble. Thankfully Costas the captain knew I was on my way and so kindly entertained my fellow ‘Concorders’ whilst I hurtled through the Paphos streets. Dashing towards the boat I noticed a cute but terrified little dog wandering around the jetty, looking for scraps maybe?

Alarms should have sounded when the captain, whilst welcoming me, scooped ‘Lily’ up into his arms and placed her on board with us. She immediately found a safe seat right in the middle and clung on ready for the ride.

After the obligatory safety announcement we set off out to sea at a fair old pace, sending out plumes of snow white spray behind the boat. Those of us keen to get a view of the coastline as it whizzed by soon found out why Lily and her friend Snoopy stuck to the middle of the boat. It was like being in a carwash! Rather than the suave boat type I’d dressed to be, I now looked like a drowned rat. Impressed at the speed of the craft and how the experience had taken me by surprise, I settled back on one of the seats just as the guy in charge of the accelerator seemed to press the ‘rocket boost’ button in error. It was like the USS Enterprise going into warp drive. In seconds we were going so fast that the sea was a blur. Above the roar of the engines I heard Captain Kirk shout, ‘Watch us make rainbows!’ Looking behind now at the thrust from the engines, in the atomised water that drifted above the spray, a beautiful rainbow had formed as the hot clear Paphos sun glinted on the droplets suspended in the air.

Moments later we paused for breath by a sliver of an island and the captain regaled us with tales from World War II and introduced us to the sea life and geography of Cypriot waters. You can fish from the boat and a full range of equipment for pitting your skills against the likes of marlin, swordfish and tuna is available. Thoroughly entertained, we headed back to port via the Paphos shipwreck and heard about the ‘Once in a Lifetime’ storm that had thrown the ship so far onto the reef that it could not be salvaged.

Our trip had lasted an hour but there’s a variety of trips up to a whole day in length for the really adventurous. In 2011 the seating onboard is being redesigned to be able to offer parties and weddings on board. I just hope the bride’s dress is waterproof!
